Joomla is an award-winning content management system used by millions around the world, including some of the most respected corporations. The debate about which is better, WordPress or Joomla, has raged on for decades now.
Joomla was based on a CMS system called Mambo and has developed to be one of the best all purpose CMS systems on the market. The CMS is structured in terms of components, plugins, templates, extensions and modules and it runs on PHP with a MySQL / PostgreSQL back-end.
To create further confusion, a Joomla extension is equivalent to a WordPress plugin. One the other hand a Joomla plugin is used by developers for something completely different.
Pros:
- Joomla has almost 8000 extensions which is enough to cover most of the features you'd need.
- Extremely competent in managing difficult and complex tasks.
Cons:
- Joomla has made in roads with its latest user interface but has a steeper learning curve.
- It can be overkill for the most basic websites.
